The local network in FL and nationwide in 1988 had much the same distribution package that would be used to pad out Mystery Science Theater 3000's fledgling first season on local Minnesota television, which would end with Legend of the Dinosaurs, and Dr. I didn't need a video rental store anymore because the doctor had everything I loved. Every Saturday at noon right after cartoons, the good doctor hosted everything from Hammer classics to Carrie, Lake of Dracula to The Illustrated Man, and War of the Worlds to War of the Gargantuas. Moving to the state of Florida fixed that problem for me mercifully when I discovered local horror host Dr. The box art stayed with me, but I became preoccupied and let it go for a while, never knowing when I might get a chance to see the movie finally. I'd hesitated just to buy it on first glance as I planned, doubtful at the last minute that it would be worth the purchase and not just worthy of a rental. I even saw the VHS box on the shelf for purchase the day it was released, but I was only there one last time to say my goodbyes. All I got to see of it was a little promotional poster in the video store before my family moved. It was 1987, and Sandy Frank had delivered gold to a young kaiju/tokusatsu fan with the Feature Creatures and Just for Kids video imprint releases of Gamera, Fugitive Alien, Mighty Jack, and Time of the Apes. I was nine years old, and one of my favorite past times was riding my bicycle a few blocks down the street to a little locally owned VHS rental store. I was going through a great deal of emotional turmoil, and my family was about to move to another state when my stepfather got a new job. Legend came out on VHS in the US during a major transition in my life. Just sitting here writing this now, I may have to watch the movie again as soon as I am finished. For me, perhaps the feeling is more sentimental than an acknowledgment of production, but I can drop everything to watch this movie if even a little snippet of its soundtrack pops into my head. I'm one of maybe four people that I can confirm believe this movie to be an underappreciated classic.
